December 2006 marks the 40th anniversary of the
official launch of the Trekka at Motor Industries’ assembly plant in Otahuhu.
The
Minister of Customs Norm Shelton did the honours, boldly declaring,“I am told that
as far as is known there is no vehicle of similar specification to this one produced here
or overseas”.
Note in the top photo the white sheet hung over the ramp, to be drawn aside as the first
production models rolled out below the banner Trekka Terrific!
There was a mild panic among plant staff when it was noticed that one of the vehicles which
drove down the launch ramp, was missing its front bumper.
The photos were taken by visiting retired Skoda designer Josef Velebny.
